Have you ever listened to an underrated artist and felt that they should have much more recognition? That's how I feel about a multi-talented artist, songwriter, and producer Isaia Huron, originally from Greenville, South Carolina. I fell in love with him during the pandemic when I heard “Loving You Is a Mountain” (2020), a song randomly selected by Spotify for my weekly curated playlist. I listened to that song so much and remember thinking that it was beautiful, poetic, and not the kind of mainstream music you hear, which made me love it more.

At the time, it did not occur to me to listen to more of his songs. I just fell in love with that one and would play it often or vibe to it while on the road whenever my playlist would shuffle to it. In this streaming era where we use Spotify and iTunes and other means to listen to old and find new favorites, it’s easy to get hooked on one song. It’s rare for us to take a deeper dive into new artists. It would be 2-3 years later before I got the bright idea to listen to more of his songs. Once I did, I became a devoted forever fan.

I, then, fell in love with “Fallen/DGYLA” from the Bound (2021) album. Honestly, I love a lot of songs from this album. One of the reasons I’m drawn to his music is because of the complete composition of a song. From the words to the instruments to the way in which he sings the songs. It’s soulful, thought and emotion-provoking, and fun. It’s R&B that’s also very indie and draws on different genres, in my opinion. The things that make the songs different are what make them beautiful and really made me fall in love with his music and style.

His most recent album, I’ll Finish The Lyrics Later, is a no-skips album. Truly. I have my favorites (BONES, TANGERINE, AISHA POTTER, SMITHSON, and bell—damn near the whole album) but I find that each song has something unique to offer. I also enjoy the song SELF 2, but I love the original version of it from the Bound album more.

Now, what does this have to do with Three Panels Press? We are, after all, a poetry, photography, art, and prose magazine with an emphasis on art history. Well, music is poetry. The lyrics are words straight from the heart and experiences of a musical artist. Music is art from the album cover to the music videos to what the words convey and provoke in others. Isaia Huron’s music is pure art. I encourage you to listen to his songs (including the ones on SoundCloud, some of which you may not find on music streaming platforms). I hope I get to see him in concert one day. I’m still trying to get him to do a song with me (lol). Manifesting!

Anyway, don’t sleep on him. Stream Isaia Huron’s music. Follow along with his journey. Hop on the bandwagon!
